In order to create a library program that supports teaching and learning for all users, I’ll need to play an active role in maintaining policies and procedures for the media center. This will mean staying up to date on county policies, creating my own policies and procedures where appropriate, and sharing this information with my stakeholders. I’ll also need to consider the physical needs of my library users: how can I create a space that will best meet our learners’ needs?
During my Organization and Access course, I dedicated a portion of my library website to Policies and Procedures. This site is designed to be shared: to answer questions for a variety of visitors and to keep the media center running smoothly. Having a set policy will ensure that all stakeholders are well informed and that decisions are made to consistently support the school community. I also created a Facilities Plan to more closely align to the goals I learned during the course: this plan reflects the importance of equitable access to all resources for all users.
One aim that I have for the future is to take the lead with policy updates at the county level. During my first year in the media center, I was able to see some more experienced specialists collaborate to update our handbook. Having the chance to see our policies updated by a team of my colleagues, working together with our county administration was an inspiring experience. I’d love to take this opportunity if it presents itself in the future!
