4.2 Professional Development

This artifact contains several significant parts to represent my commitment to professional growth. My Tribute (a formal, written statement of my core library beliefs) and Leadership Analysis (a breakdown of my personal leadership style) were both “aha!” moments: I have never carefully considered my own voice in my professional development, or my leadership “style” before this assignment. This artifact also contains a plan for professional development that I am still in the process of implementing because my professional growth is an ongoing process. I continue to use many of these original objectives to guide my leadership decisions, even though this assignment was created several months ago!
This artifact demonstrates strength in its careful reflection and personalization. Many of our course discussions focused on the idea that leadership and professional growth do not just happen: we need to be purposeful in cultivating our strengths and supporting our weaknesses as we grow as educators. The reflection and planning in this document gave me the experience of breaking down my “big” professional development goals into manageable pieces. I will continue to use this format as I set future goals.
One area that I can continue to edit and change as I move through my media career is the area dedicated to professional resources. I find new articles and information sources for teachers frequently, especially as internet resources change and update. I am also reinvigorated by the Maryland Association of School Librarians Conference each fall. As new ideas come across my desk, collecting them in a plan similar to this one can be a great way to ensure that they make their way into my instruction and help me grow.
