2.3 Respect for Diversity
Each media specialist works to meet the needs a diverse population of users. The artifacts here demonstrate the careful work I will do to make sure my collection represents my students and best serves them as they learn. I choose my Selection Sources document as one artifact, because selection sources like those included in this document can help specialists stay on top of the huge, exciting world of children’s literature and digital resources. I also included a sample of an evaluation I completed in my Young Adult Literature course, as evidence of how award winners, positive reviews, and thoughtful reflection can all guide the purchasing of diverse materials.
These artifacts, when combined with those from the first ALA standard of Knowledge of Learners and Learning, present an impression of how I will cultivate my collection to support the diverse needs of all learners in our community. I still continue to use the Selection Sources reviewed in my coursework assignment to stay updated on new materials available to libraries and learners. I also use the same thoughtful reflection practice as I review books for purchase. The Diversity Evaluation document is a small sample of this constant process of making the most of my budget to meet student needs. As I work to develop a complete portfolio, I find that this standard is a place for professional growth. In my current position at a highly diverse, Title 1 school, I’d like to more fully document all of the ways the Media Center and its resources are essential for student success, and the steps I am taking to keep it that way! Providing students with both academic texts that meet their needs and pleasure reading options that represent their personal experiences for connection are goals I will continue to work towards in my career in media. |
Our Spanish Language display welcomes our large population of English Language learners to our school with a variery of titles.
