The school library is a place where students can learn about their information rights, but also about the responsibilities that come with those rights. In both my Reference Resources site and my Cyberbullying Voice Thread, I provide information for students and staff about the changing needs of 21st century learners.
These artifacts also provide an example of the different means of information sharing from the media center: websites and Voicethreads are two convenient ways to make information more accessible for library users. Convenience and accessibility help ensure that my library users are educated about ethical information use, and that they are more likely to practice responsible research and idea sharing. I’ll need to make resources realistic and practical for our staff members, and these tools can help make that goal achievable.
My biggest “aha” moment as I created these artifacts was my own misinformation about the topics of intellectual property rights. As a classroom teacher, I had very little course prep on the ideas of copyright, besides the most basic reminders from professors. Now that I have the experience and background of a SLM degree, I plan to do my best to make sure my staff members are better informed, and ready to pass on information responsibility to their students.
