2.2 Reading Promotion
"Mystery Books" entice readers as teacher recommended books with a little intrigue!
|
A reading promotion plan provides the details for one of the most challenging and rewarding tasks of librarians everywhere: persuading their readers to pick up a book! My artifact includes two plans for promoting picture books to K-2 students through an online author meet up and a short presentation of book trailers. American Association of School Librarians Benchmarks for Learning are included to highlight the importance of reading promotion, as well as a brief summary of how this plan will help entice reluctant readers.
These plans incorporate technology as a means of both communication and creative expression. 21st century learners should have authentic experiences with online communication: what better means to get in touch with a favorite author than a budget friendly Skype visit? Visiting with an author sparks curiosity in students and enthusiasm for not only that author’s books but also reading in general. Book trailers as a presentation means are also highly engaging for students. Having a teacher tell you to read may be nothing new, but listening to a book trailer that shows you the potential of a book may just be the hook a reluctant reader needs. In future reading promotions, I’d like to document stronger curricular connections in my plans. Collaboration with classroom teachers to highlight a specific author, or topic can guide promotions in the library. Connection to grade level or school improvement goals can focus reading promotions for the greatest effect on readers: students who come to the library to explore pleasure reading will be more likely to succeed when they need to read for informational purposes later. These plans are just the beginning of many potential reading promotions: all working to find each student’s next favorite book. |
