I selected two artifacts for this objective of my portfolio. My selection criteria document as well as my Dewey charts and Library of Congress subject headings are two examples of ways that I can ensure that our collection is stocked with the highest quality materials that best meet our community’s needs.
The selection criteria document is designed to guide purchasing decisions as I work to make the best use of the media center budget each year. In addition to using county selection policies, having my own formal, written statement on how and why I will select materials will ensure that stakeholders stay well informed of the process I am using to build our collection. The charts and subject headings will assist media center users as they look to access our collection. Students need repeated experiences in navigating our collection to learn how to easily fulfill information needs. These documents will support students as they learn. Staff members who are browsing after library hours, or who are new to our school will also benefit from these resources. An organized, accessible collection will ensure our media users get the most out of our carefully selected materials! The practicality of these documents is their strength: I have already used these documents in my current position. I will need to continue to edit and update as my collection changes, but these documents are a start. My selection criteria especially will be the most effective if frequently reviewed, so keeping this policy, as well as my others, current is my main goal for the future. |
